Matt Levey, MSc

Fisheries Ecologist
Matt Levey grew up in southern California and graduated
from San Diego State University where he earned degrees in Biology and
Political Science. After graduating Mr. Levey went to work for the California
Department of Fish & Game where he worked on near-shore fisheries
research. While working for the CDFG he began the graduate program at
Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in the Ichthyology Lab working under
Gregor Cailliet. At MLML Mr. Levey's interests were marine fish ecology
and essential fish habitat. His thesis project focused on the distribution
and abundance of reef fishes among various hard bottom habitats at two
locations in the Gulf of California. Matt's interest in ecology and
fish habitat led him to take a course in seafloor mapping, which soon
led to job opportunities working with the Seafloor Mapping Lab at CSUMB
and the Habitat Ecology Group at the NOAA Fisheries Santa Cruz Lab.
Mr. Levey is currently the Pacific Region Project Manager for AOA Geophysics'
Marine Geoscience Division and has spent considerable time working on
numerous seafloor mapping and GIS related projects around the world.
Mr. Levey's main skills are project planning and implementation, and
GIS data collection, management, analysis, and presentation. He especially
excels at integrating advanced technologies with conventional tools
for finding practical and economical solutions to spatially relevant
problems.
